FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — May 20, 2008

Jesup — The Jesup Police Department is set to introduce a drug safety and education program to local 6th grade students.

The Jesup Police Department will present each student with a copy of the 144-page handbook, Drug Safety, which is produced by Gateway Community Safety Net. The book is widely used to eduate and increase awareness of substance abuse. Officers Cory Hartmann and Mike Foland will be heading the presentations.

In addition to educating youth, the materials are also a valuable family resource. Children learn effective strategies to resist peer pressure tactics, while parents receive tips to help keep their kids drug-free. Important resource contacts and information are contained inside as well.

The books have been provided thanks to the generous support of local businesses and organizations. An excellent resource for parents, the programs contain important telephone numbers as well as websites for more help.

A recent study revealed that drug use (particularly cocaine use) among youth has been steadily increasing over the past decade. Law Enforcement groups and community organizations around the country are implementing youth education programs in an effort to prevent drug abuse before it starts.

“The program will be an excellent tool in the fight against drugs. While drug abuse isn’t an overwhelming issue in our community, the program puts us another step ahead of the rising problem,” said Chief Rick Deitrick.

For more information on the program, contact the Jesup Police Department at (319) 827-1919.
